JBA - the TV Connection

Print
From 1991 until 2003 JBA offered regular short courses on TV technology. These were initially a "spin out" of courses offered by the old Independent Broadcasting Authority's Harman Training College, where I was a Principal Lecturer. (The Independent Broadcasting Authority was dissolved at the end of 1990, being effectively replaced by the ITC – now OFCOM – and ntl broadcast – now arqiva).

Initially the courses were based on material licensed from the IBA/ITC, together with a text book I had a hand in producing just before the demise of the IBA (Colour Television 2nd ed.). Later, I produced extensive course support material to accommodate advances in broadcast and TV technology, and to take advantage of affordable colour in printing handouts. (A selection of these materials is available elsewhere on this web site.)

During the 90s, large numbers of people were moving into a fast-growing TV industry in response to the introduction of new technologies, such as digital transmission and flexible point-to-point satellite links. The JBA courses were used by a wide range of companies for both technical and non-technical staff, in order to introduce them to the concepts, terminology and technology associated with TV production and broadcasting.

It was an exciting time and also a privilege to work for many of the companies that are now household names such as NDS (the company behind Sky Digital's technology) and NTL (now Virgin Media), and with many of the industry's "movers and shakers". For a number of reasons, the regular series of short courses finished around 2003, but the need for information still exists as TV and video continues to expand and to merge with an ever-widening range of other technologies. Due to the continued interest I receive in the TV technology training, I have decided to make available a selection of the high-quality and accessible course support materials that accompanied those short courses – they are now available here.

And if you feel that you or your colleagues could use a personalised course in aspects of TV or video technology, JBA is once again happy to offer short courses, but on a bespoke basis. Just get in touch to discuss your needs and the best way I can help you to meet them.
