I started JBA in 1991 as a "spin out" of the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) when it was disbanded by the 1990 Broadcasting Act. My intention was to market training services into broadcast technology companies – a continuation of my work for the IBA. Since it looked likely that I would be involving some of my ex-colleagues in this work "James Brice Associates" seemed an appropriate name, as well as providing a set of initials close enough to those of my former employer to be memorable to potential clients.
Since that time, the fragments of the old IBA have gone through numerous changes of ownership, name and structure, but have also become significant world players in broadcasting and digital media technology. I'm proud to say that most of these have been – or remain – JBA clients for training, writing and consultancy services.
As one of my areas of responsibility at the IBA was training in the microcomputer technology that appeared in TV transmitters during the 1980s, I was able to support the needs of my own business in terms of office IT. This expertise then led to me diversifying at a later point into training services in IT for general office and SME environments. In recent years I have regularly run training sessions in the use of Microsoft Office, Open Office, and several specialist software tools.
I should also mention that besides my activities as JBA, I am also retained as a Technology Consultant by the School of Arts, Languages and Literatures at the University of Exeter.
